WASHINGTON—U.S. Representative Todd Tiahrt (R-Goddard) today issued the following statement after the Kansas Army National Guard announced the death of Specialist Ronald Andrew Schmidt who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Specialist Schmidt, 18, of Newton, died August 3rd in Iraq from injuries suffered after the vehicle he was riding in overturned on patrol in Iraq. Specialist Schmidt was assigned to the Kansas National Guard's Battery C, 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery. He was trained as a cannon crewman after graduating from Newton High School in May 2007.
"My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of our fallen hero, Specialist Ronald Schmidt. He served his country with great courage and dedication. It is because of brave men and woman, like Specialist Ronald Schmidt, that our country remains safe today. I am appreciative of all those in uniform who are sacrificing so much to take the fight to the enemy, while keeping us safe here at home."
