WICHITA—U.S. Representative Todd Tiahrt (R-Goddard) issued the following statement today following news that John McCain has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate. "The sound we are hearing today is another glass ceiling breaking," said Tiahrt. "John McCain's choice of Governor Palin as his running mate further demonstrates the momentous Big Tent nature of the Republican party.

"I applaud Senator McCain for selecting Governor Palin as his running mate, and I hope we can all soon celebrate the historic achievement of electing our first female vice president."

Republicans have selected many distinguished women who have served in both elected and appointed roles. A few of these women include: Margaret Spellings is serving as Secretary of Education; Elizabeth H. Dole has served as Secretary of Transportation before being elected as the first female U.S. Senator from North Carolina; Dr. Condoleezza Rice has served as National Security Advisor and is currently serving as Secretary of State; Elaine Chao is serving as Secretary of Labor; Mary E. Peters is serving as the Secretary of Transportation; Ambassador Susan Schwab is serving as the U. S. Trade Representative; Gale A. Norton served as Secretary of the Interior; Margaret M. Heckler served as Secretary of Health and Human Services and Ambassador to Ireland; and Ann McLaughlin Korologos served as Secretary of Labor.
